Rinse and wash your period panties

Period panties care 101: Washing tips to maximize their lifespan

Period panties are a comfortable, practical and sustainable alternative to disposable pads and tampons. However they do require special care in order to last longer! So, how can you look after them properly? Explore some simple tips to keep your period panties in top condition, extending their lifespan and maintaining their effectiveness.

1. Wash before use

Before wearing your period panties for the first time, it’s essential to give them a proper wash. This initial wash will help to activate the absorbent layers, ensuring they work at full capacity when you need them, and remove any residues from manufacturing and packaging that might irritate your skin. Simply toss them in a cold or lukewarm wash with mild detergent before using them. This first wash sets the stage for better absorption and comfort from day one.

2. Change regularly to maintain hygiene

Even though period panties are designed to handle menstrual flow, changing them regularly is crucial to maintain hygiene. Depending on your flow, consider switching them every 8-10 hours, or sooner if necessary during heavy days. By rotating between several pairs throughout your period, you’ll also reduce wear and tear on individual pairs.

3. Rinse with water before washing

After wearing your period panties, rinse them thoroughly with lukewarm or cold water before tossing them in the washing machine or hand washing them. This will helps to prevent stains from setting by flushing out menstrual blood and preserve the absorbent layers, as hot water can affect their ability to absorb properly. Simply run the panties under cold or lukewarm water until the water runs clear.

4. Use gentle detergents and avoid glycerin-based products

When washing your period panties, choose mild, fragrance-free detergents. Harsh chemicals, bleach, or strong fragrances can break down the delicate fibers over time, compromising both the fabric and the absorbent properties. Additionally, avoid detergents that contain glycerin, as it can coat the absorbent layers and make them less effective.  Stick to gentle laundry detergents designed for delicates or sensitive skin. This small step will help keep your period panties soft, effective, and comfortable for many cycles to come.

5. Air dry to protect the fabric fibers

For the best results, always air dry your period panties instead of using a tumble dryer. Hang them in a well-ventilated area out of direct sunlight. This method ensures that the fabric retains its shape, elasticity, and absorption capacity for longer!

By following these simple steps, you’ll ensure your period panties remain fresh, absorbent, and long-lasting. Caring for them properly not only maintains their effectiveness but also reduces waste and saves money in the long run.
